Well, it’s only the longlist. Maybe I should wait for the shortlist? And I’m already two weeks late, but we’ll blame that on the internetless half term. The period of the longlist should now be considerably shorter as the shortlist will be with us shortly. (Sorry, it’s quite warm today.)
The list: Allan Ahlberg, The Boyhood of Burglar Bill; Charlie Fletcher, Stoneheart; Mary Hoffman, The Falconer’s Knot; Tim Lott, Fearless; Mal Peet, The Penalty; Sally Prue, The Truth Sayer; Andy Stanton and David Tazzyman, Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire and Jenny Valentine, Finding Violet Park.
I’m not even going to begin claiming to have read all of these. So my inevitable prediction is not based on knowledge. The bookwitch’s shortlist has Mary Hoffman, Tim Lott, Sally Prue and Jenny Valentine on it. And long before this longlist was made public I had a sudden interest in Sally Prue. Could that be a sign?

Well, I’m no better read on this year’s list than you are, Witch, but I’ve heard great things about Stoneheart. Just thought I’d mention that….

Ah, but you’re always wrong, so that should prove my predictions.
