My hairdresser is just off to Chicago with her family, for half term. I suspect she’s going to need all those jumpers she has packed, because it sounds as if it’s a bit chilly over there right now.
I felt she couldn’t possibly do justice to Chicago without some local literature, so I forced a copy of Sara Paretsky’s Fire Sale on her, to read on the plane. That should prepare her for anything that happens, though she already knew that South Side might not be a good destination for tourists.
For my part I asked if she could find me a map of Chicago. We always feel a little bit lost when V I Warshawski takes herself all over the place, and we would love to know how things connect.
All this will hopefully prepare us for when Sara comes to the wilds of Manchester at Easter.

I’m not sure it’s quite fair to suggest that all of Chicago will be like the Chicago that Paretsky writes about. I mean, I’d be pretty scared if Edinburgh was actually at all like what Ian Rankin says it is…
Incidentally, for anyone who has watched the TV adaptations of Rebus, I live literally round the corner from the house that was used as his home in adaptation!

We used to live in Edinburgh, in Leith, and for a long time, having never read Ian Rankin I thought Rebus was a building firm. This was because when they were filming one of the adaptations there were arrows all over the place saying ‘Rebus’ to show the film crews where to go!

I have just finished watching a Mankell on television, and the number of explosions hitting idyllic Ystad is quite worrying.

A propos Mankell - isn’t it exciting that the beeb have signed up Kenneth Branagh for their adaptations!
