I was lucky enough to meet her twice, about twelve years apart. Each time she gave an impression of gleaming wit, and otherness. There was a glimpse of an extra dimension about her. She was sharp and kind and magical. I have never met anyone else like her. I wish you had met her, because it is so hard to describe and yet I think you would recognise her instantly.

As I might have already mentioned, Joan Aiken was one of the people I felt really upset about, when I realised it was too late to ever meet her.

And the Felix books have lived in Son's bookcase ever since, which indicates how much he rates them, even now.

Yes, you are right, they are lovely. She was brilliant at ghost/horror/myth stories too. There are a few writers who I think of as of her period ( Jan Mark, Penelope Lively, Adele Geras, Robert Westall) that just need to be much better known.

I'll ask to be carried next time. If I'm invited a next time...
I'm guessing the venue likes to be cool, and I failed in the looks and movement tests.

Hooray, BW, for mentioing handrails and lifts! Accessibility (or that lack of it) has meant my being excluded from many events, plus the fact that they often involve lots of standing around, which presents another barrier. Although, when I visited the HQ of Walker Books a few years back, they were wonderfully helpful in a straightforward and unfussy way, when I contacted them beforehand, making the whole experience not just fun, but also comfortably possible.

Besides, I didn't need the lift up. Just felt I had to humour the young man.
I needed the lift down, however... No young man then. Not to worry, a witch can always fling herself in a downwards direction.
